Fractional CMO Cost in South Africa (2026) | Hedley Sydney

A fractional CMO who sits on your executive committee (EXCO) and is accountable for revenue typically costs R70,000 to R150,000 a month in South Africa. Marketing advisory costs R20,000 to R40,000 a month. Project and go-to-market work is priced by scope. Lower published ranges often describe a different job, not a cheaper version of this one.

Why do fractional CMO quotes vary so much?

Because the same title is used for three different jobs. All three are legitimate and useful. The trouble starts when you compare them as if they were one product.

A good consultant will often out-execute an executive on a specific channel, and many businesses need exactly that. A fractional CMO is different because the role carries executive accountability. That accountability is what the price reflects.

What does a R70,000 to R150,000 fractional CMO Retainer cover?

It covers an executive who is part of your leadership team, not a supplier. In my engagements, that means:

  • A seat on EXCO. Marketing is represented where budget, pricing and strategy are decided.
  • Leadership of the marketing team. Coaching, priorities, hiring and holding agencies to account.
  • Strategy and plans. A marketing audit, a 90-day plan and a six-month strategy tied to the company's commercial goals.
  • Accountability for outcomes. Eg: Revenue contribution and pipeline, CAC to LTV in SaaS businesses, and demand generation metrics, including visibility in search (SEO) and in AI answers (GEO).
  • Sales alignment. One shared view of the funnel between marketing and sales.

What moves a fee within the R70,000 to R150,000 range?

Four things decide where an engagement lands:

  1. Scope of the remit. Marketing only, or also product marketing, pricing input and sales alignment.
  2. Complexity of the commercial model. SaaS unit economics (CAC to LTV), multiple products, or several markets take more executive time than a single-product business.
  3. Size and state of the team. Building a team from scratch costs more time than coaching a capable one.
  4. Time commitment and term. Fractional CMO engagements typically run for 6 to 12 months, because strategy needs time to reach pipeline.

How are advisory, project and go-to-market engagements priced?

Marketing advisory costs R20,000 to R40,000 a month. It suits a business that already has a marketing lead doing the work but wants a senior voice when the stakes are high. It includes:

  • A monthly strategy review with the EXCO or board
  • Ad-hoc access between sessions
  • A quarterly review of the plan, spend and pipeline contribution
  • Guidance on hiring senior marketing roles

Project and go-to-market work is priced on complexity, duration and outcomes. A go-to-market strategy for a new segment or product is a different size of job from a positioning project or a market research study, so there is no standard rate. These engagements usually run on a consulting basis, with fixed or milestone-based pricing, and they do not normally include an EXCO seat.

The practical difference is accountability. Advisory and project work improve the decisions you make. A fractional CMO makes and owns those decisions with you.

How does this compare with hiring a full-time CMO?

Published South African data on CMO pay is thin and mixes companies of very different sizes, so treat these figures as a floor for executive roles at mid-market and enterprise companies.

Measure

Figure

Average base salary, CMO, South Africa

R 1,580,088 a year

90th percentile salary

R2,200,000 a year

Highest total compensation reported

R3,000,000 a year, including bonus and profit share

Fractional CMO, monthly

R70,000 to R150,000 depending on involvement

Run for a full year, an EXCO-level engagement at R70,000 to R150,000 a month comes to R840,000 to R1.8 million. That is in the same range as a full-time CMO's salary, not far below it. The difference is what surrounds the number: no benefits, bonus or recruitment fees, no permanent commitment, and the freedom to scale the engagement up or down. Experience drives price in other markets too: one US guide puts newer fractional CMOs at US$4,000 (R65,000) to US$10,000 (R165,000) a month, and those with 20 years of experience at US$15,000 (R246,000)to US$20,000 (R328,000) (GoFractional, updated August 2026).

How do you tell which role you are hiring?

Judge the role, not the title. Ask any fractional CMO these six questions and compare the answers:

  1. What executive roles have you held? Ask for titles, companies and who you reported to.
  2. Will you sit on our EXCO? If the answer is no, you are hiring a consultant or an adviser, which may be the right choice.
  3. Which numbers will you own? Revenue contribution, pipeline and CAC to LTV are executive numbers. Impressions and posts are activity.
  4. Whose job is it to hire, coach and manage the marketing team? If it is yours, the role is advisory.
  5. Can I speak to a CEO you have worked with? A reference from a chief executive shows how someone operates at that level.

When is a lower-priced option the right call?

A fractional CMO is not the right answer for every business. Choose a consultant or a fractional marketing lead when:

  • The strategy is settled, and you need campaigns, content or channels executed.
  • You already have a capable head of marketing and need extra capacity.
  • You are pre-revenue or too early for an executive-level marketing function.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a fractional CMO cost in South Africa?

An EXCO-level fractional CMO typically costs R70,000 to R150,000 a month. Marketing advisory costs R20,000 to R40,000 a month. Project and go-to-market work is priced by complexity, duration and outcomes. Published guides quoting lower figures often cover a wider mix of roles.

Why do fractional CMO fees vary so much?

Fees track the level of accountability. A consultant delivers tasks, a fractional marketing lead runs the function, and a fractional CMO carries executive responsibility for revenue and strategy. Experience, time commitment and the complexity of the business also move the price.

Is a fractional CMO cheaper than a full-time CMO?

Not on annual cost alone. An EXCO-level engagement at R70,000 to R150,000 a month comes to R840,000 to R1.8 million over a year, against an average CMO base salary of R 1,580,088  before benefits and bonus. The difference is flexibility: no permanent hire, benefits or recruitment fees, and an engagement that scales with your needs.

What is the difference between a fractional CMO and a marketing consultant?

A fractional CMO sits on the executive committee, leads the marketing team and is accountable for outcomes such as revenue and CAC to LTV. A marketing consultant advises on or delivers defined work and usually does not carry that accountability.

How long does a fractional CMO engagement last?

A fractional CMO engagement typically runs for 6 to 12 months, because strategy takes time to reach pipeline. Advisory is billed monthly. Project and go-to-market work runs for the length of the scope.

When is the right time for a Fractional CMO vs a Consultant?.

If you made it this far, we probably share a bias: that marketing is a craft with numbers attached, not a brand project with money attached. If you want to pressure-test that bias against a real business - yours - I offer a free 30-minute consultation. No slides.
